David Gillick has produced a sensational performance at the Aviva Grand Prix to win the 400m, equalling his own Irish Indoor Record of 45.52 seconds.
Gillick has also confirmed that he will run in the World Championship in Doha, Qatar, next month.
The time is also the second fastest in the world’s top list behind Torrin Lawrence of USA making Gillick a potential medal favourite for the World Indoors in Doha in March.
Gillick demolished the field with Rabah Yousif of Sudan finishing second in 46.24 seconds. Ricardo Chambers of Jamaica was the leader at the bell, with Gillick tucked in behind him. The Dubliner made one clean decisive move, to come inside Chambers to take the lead at the top bend.
He powered away from rest of the field to win in convincing style, easing up over the line.
Speaking after the race Gillick said: ‘I am delighted. I knew I was in good shape, but I wasn’t sure exactly how I was going to run today. If I had of known how fast the race was I would have dipped to break the National Record.’
Kelly Proper of Ferrybank Athletica Club finished fifth in the Women’s Long Jump in 6.33 meters.
Derval O’Rourke had to withdrawn from the Women’s 60m Hurdles for precautionary reasons due to a slight illness.
