Thomas Chamney finished 7th in the heats of the 1,500m in a time of 3:42.54 which wasn’t enough to earn him a fastest runner up place in the semi-finals.
In an event filled race Chamney started well before taking up a position near the back and he finished strongly with the heat being won by Kenya’s Asbel Kipruto Kiprop in 3:41.42.
It was unfortunate for Chamney, whose time would have won the first heat, with the last heat setting a fast pace and pushing him out of possible semi-final spot.
Earlier today Robert Heffernan finished 15th in the final of the 20k walk. The Cork athlete came home in a season’s best time of 1:22:09 in what was a gruelling race in the 27 degree heat in Germany. The race was won by Russia’s Olympic champion Valeriy Borchin with the 22-year-old finishing in a time of 1:18:41.
There was disappointment for Ireland in the Women’s 3000m Steeplechase. Wicklow’s Roisin McGettigan finished 13th in her heat in a time of 9.59.10 well off her personal best and did not qualify for the semi-final.
Olive Loughnane is the only Irish athlete in action on Sunday. Loughnane – who was 7th in last year’s Olympic Games - will compete in the final of the 20k Walk at 11:00am Irish time.
