Bolt: 'I can smash my world record'

Usain Bolt believes he can take a huge chunk out of the 100 metres world record he set in sensational fashion at the Beijing Olympics last summer.

The Jamaican was already celebrating as he cruised across the line in 9.69 seconds, and he now believes he can run 9.54sec.

Asked about his prospects of surpassing his own world record, Bolt told BBC Radio Five Live's Sportsweek programme: ‘I don't really think about it but I think it's going to be possible. If everything goes well in training then there shouldn't be a problem I think.

‘My coach in Beijing was saying I'll probably run 9.54 and I think I definitely can do that. If my coach says I can do that then he knows why he said that.

‘Every time he told me I would run a time I'd definitely do it so I know when he says something like that there's a reason why, so I definitely think I can run 9.54.’

Bolt, who competes over 150m in Manchester today, had his training disrupted by a car accident last month but he is confident he will be in optimum condition for this summer's World Championships in Berlin.

‘The focus is just to get back on target, get back in shape and get my focus back on what I need to do to get to the World Championships and be in the best shape that I can be in,’ the 22-year-old continued.

As well as setting a new 100m world record in Beijing, Bolt also broke Michael Johnson's 200m mark and was part of the Jamaican team that posted a new best in the 4x100m relay.

Bolt was always considered better over the longer sprints before his incredible 100m season last year, and he revealed Johnson's 400m mark is also in his sights.

He said: ‘I don't put a really big thing on it. I think people really, really want me to do it, to try to do it, because I've done so great and they know me more as a 400 metre runner.

‘I think I'll definitely give it a shot. My coach is really pressing me on trying to do that.’

Asked how long he can stay at the top of the sport, Bolt added: ‘Maybe six years if I really focus on the goal and just work for it.

‘My main goal is to make myself a legend and I'm going to work really hard to do that so that's the aim for me. I've just started, I've got a lot more to go.’
