Hungary's Fazekas qualifies for Beijing

Hungarian discus thrower Robert Fazekas, who missed out on a gold medal in Athens due to a doping violation, has met the qualifying standard for Beijing and will compete in the Games.

Fazekas, who returned to competition in 2007 after a two-year ban, threw 64.56 meters late on Tuesday in Ljubljana, just ahead of the 64.50 needed for a spot on the team.

The Hungarian Athletics Association and the Hungarian Olympics Committee said they had no objection to Fazekas competing in Beijing.

‘Fazekas qualified legitimately and we will enter him,’ Marton Gyulai, secretary general of the association, said.

‘It would be highly unethical if we raised an objection now that he qualified.’

Fazekas finished first in Athens but did not provide a sufficient urine sample and was disqualified.

His disqualification came as team mate Adrian Annus was stripped of his hammer throwing gold medal for a doping violation.

Wednesday is the final day to achieve Olympic qualifying standards in athletics.
