Jamie Costin has recovered after collapsing towards the finish of the 50 kilometres walk at the World Championships in Osaka on Saturday morning.

The 30-year-old former Irish record holder, also suffering from a pulled calf muscle and in temperatures of over 30 degrees, had to call it a day with eight kilometres of the race remaining.

‘He's okay,’ stressed Max Jones, Athletics Ireland coaching director.

‘He's up and about now and recovering.’

Colin Griffin also failed to finish the distance after being disqualified for ‘lifting’, 16km into the race when lying 14th.

World record holder Nathan Deakes of Australia won the endurance event in a season's best three hours 43minutes 53seconds from Yohan Diniz of France and Italy's Alex Schwazer.
