Alistair Cragg smashed Mark Carroll’s Irish 10,000m record yesterday at the Payton Jordan Cardinal Invitational in Stanford University in the US.  Cragg recorded a time of 27.39.55, which was seven seconds faster than Carroll’s previous record of 27.46.82.

Cragg finished fourth overall in a race which included some of the world’s top runners over that distance.

This will be a huge boost for the Clonliffe Harriers runner, who is currently based at the University of Arkansas, following his disappointing showing at the European Indoor Championships in Birmingham earlier this year.

There were two other Irish athletes competing in the same race. Mullingar runner Martin Fagan had a new personal best as he recorded a time of 28.18.30 finishing 24th, while Mark Kenneally finished 29th in a time of 28.55.49.
