The third time the gun went, Gardender streaked away to claim his fourth European Indoor title in a stellar 6.51 seconds, the fastest time in the world this year. Hession could not quite got into the race, never quite finding his form and being passed late on to finish seventh.

But Gardener's run was truly stunning, and he finished a clear yard ahead of the field. Pickering was second with and former European Indoor record holder Ronald Pognon of France third.
