Haile Gebrselassie bounced back from the disappointment of finishing only ninth in April's Flora London Marathon with a runaway victory in Berlin this morning.

The 33-year-old Ethiopian, who clocked an unofficial time of two hours five minutes 56seconds in the Berlin Marathon, failed in his attempt to break Paul Tergat's world record time despite having been on schedule until the 39th kilometre.

Gebrselassie fell short of the Kenyan's time of 2hr 5min 55sec also achieved in Berlin three years ago.

Running the final 12km of the race alone, his mark was the fastest in the world this year.

Gete Wami made it an Ethiopian double with a runaway success in the women's race in an unofficial time of 2:21.33.

The former world 10000m champion, leading from start to finish, regained her national record from Berhane Adere.

Wami's performance was the fourth fastest in the world this year as she finished ahead of Kenya's Salina Kosgei, who posted a personal best of 2:23.22.
