Alistair Cragg's hopes of claiming a medal in the men's 5,000m at the European Championships came undone in dramatic fashion when he pulled up in pain moments after engineering a break from the main bunch.

Cragg, who came into the race nursing an Achilles injury, looked very comfortable when he made his burst with 1,600m to go only to pull up in pain seconds later.

Victory went to Spaniard Jesus Espana in a time of 13:44.70, in what was the slowest Championship 5,000m since 1969. The slow pace could probably be blamed on the rather wintry conditions at the Ullevi Stadium in Gothenburg.
