David Gillick crashed out of the 400 metres at the European Athletics Championships in Gothenburg after a bitterly disappointing seventh place finish in the semi-finals.

Gillick finished second in his first round heat in an excellent time of 46.16secs but he floundered in the wet conditions that prevailed this evening.

Joanne Cuddihy has qualified for the semi-finals of the women's 400 metres.

Cuddihy finished second in heat one of the event, behind Russia's Olga Zaytseva in an impressive time of 51.41 seconds.

Martin Fagan gave a spirited performance to claim 11th place in the 10,000 metres.

Although lacking the class of his more experienced rivals, Fagan stuck gamely to his task to post a time of 28 minutes 54.04 seconds.

That was well behind surprise winner Jan Fitschen, who clinched the gold medal for Germany by outsprinting the Spanish pair of Jose Manuel Martinez and Juan Carlos de la Ossa to finish in 28min 10.94sec.

Deirdre Ryan qualified for the high jump final after setting a new national record.

Anna Boyle failed to progress past the heat stage of the 100m. Boyle finished in fifth place in her heat, 0.15 of a second off a qualifying place.

Emily Maher did not take part in her heat in the same event after she pulled a hamstring during her warm-up routine.
