Ireland's David Gillick produced a fine performance on the first morning of the European Athletics Championships in Gothenburg finishing second in Heat Two of the men's 400 metres.
He ran a time of 46.16secs to finish just inches behind heat winner Tim Benjamin of Britain, who is one of the medal favourites.
Ireland's other four athletes failed to progress, with Paul McKee and David McCarthy narrowly missing out on qualification for the semis of the 400 metres. McKee finished fifth and McCarthy sixth in their respective heats.
Eileen O'Keeffe was eliminated after the first round of the hammer with a throw of just over 65 metres.
Michelle Carey finished fifth in her heat of the 400 hurdles. Her time of 57.61secs saw her fail to progress.
