The Irish team for the European Athletics Championships in Gothenburg in August will be finalised following the Woodies Irish National Track and Field Championships in Santry this weekend.

Alistair Cragg, European indoor 3000 metres champion runs in the 1500 metres, while fellow European champion David Gillick competes in his specialist event the 400 metres.

The latter event could produce a fascinating race as former world indoor bronze medallist Paul McKee is gradually returning to form.

A similarly exciting race is in prospect on the women's side with Karen Shinkins, who has dominated this event with high quality performances for a decade, facing the in-form Joanne Cuddihy.

Much interest will centre on Derval O'Rourke, the world 60 metres hurdles champion, as she makes final preparations for Gothenburg in the 100 metres hurdles.

In the field events, Deirdre Ryan, who set a fabulous new Irish record of 1.92 metres for the high jump in Manchester last Saturday, and Eileen O'Keeffe, who competed in the hammer in Manchester, will be the star attractions.
