World cross-country set for Kenya

The IAAF has announced that the 2007 World cross-country championships will be held in Mombasa, Kenya on 24 March, subject to formal rectification on 13 November.

The announcement comes after a two-day visit to the east African country to inspect and evaluate the facilities in the Kenyan Indian Ocean city.

The bid, which received overwhelming support from the Kenya government was strengthened after two other contenders, Florida in the United States and Madrid, Spain withdrew from the race.

The 2007 championships will revert to only four categories, 10 years after the two men's and women's short course races were introduced for the 1998 championships in the Moroccan city of Marrakech.

The 2006 championships in Fukuoka, Japan will be the last to include the short races.
