Roisin McGettigan made history today when she competed in the first ever Women's 3,000 metre Steeplechase at the World Championships in Helsinki.

Despite a brave effort, the Wicklow woman failed to qualify from her heat, clocking 9 minutes, 56.31 seconds to finish ninth of twelve athletes.

Russian Yelena Zadorozhnaya won in 9:32.96. It was disappointing for the 24-year-old McGettigan, considering her year-old PB of 9:45.60 would have qualified her as a fastest loser.

Ugandan Docus Inzikuru earned a new championship record in the third heat, with a powerful run of 9:27.85.
