World 100 metres record holder Asafa Powell still hopes to run the 4x100 relay for Jamaica at the world championships despite having to miss the individual race through injury.

Powell, who reduced the world record to 9.77 seconds this year, has been ruled out of the 100 heats on Saturday's opening day after sustaining a groin strain at the London grand prix on July 22.

His race against Olympic champion Justin Gatlin of the United States was expected to provide the highlight of the 10th world championships in Helsinki.

Powell told the International Association of Athletics Federations' official website he had been devastated by the injury.

"You train with one focus all year and to have that taken away leaves you feeling empty. I hope to be able to run the relay in Helsinki and help bring a medal back to Jamaica," Powell said.
