Ireland's European Indoor champion David Gillick eased through to the 400 metres semi-finals at the European Under-23 Championships in Erfurt, Germany this morning.
The 22-year-old Dubliner, drawn in the eighth lane, got his tactics right as finished second to Russian Konstantin Svechkar (46.19 PB) in the first heat, in a time of 46.25 secs.
Britain's gold medal favourite Robert Tobin claimed victory in the third heat in 45.98, and is the top qualifier for Friday night's semi-finals, with Gillick ranking third.
Injury ruled Le Cheile athlete David McCarthy out of the 400 heats.
