World 100 metres record holder Tim Montgomery will next week learn the date for his appeal to the Court of Arbitration for Sport (CAS) against a possible life ban for doping.

Montgomery has received a letter from the US Anti-Doping Agency (USADA) alleging serious doping violations after a raid on the BALCO laboratory in California.

CAS secretary-general Matthieu Reeb said: "The date for the hearing is still being. It will be confirmed next week but the hearing won't be before the end of October."

Montgomery, the partner of former triple Olympic champion Marion Jones, appealed to the independent Lausanne-based panel after receiving the USADA letter. USADA handles all US doping cases involving track and field athletes on behalf of the governing body USA Track & Field.

"We are taking this step because we believe that USADA's conduct has been so egregious as to remove any confidence that Tim would be fairly treated in this process," said Montgomery's lawyer Howard Jacobs.
