Five-times Olympic champion Michael Johnson will learn on Sunday if he is likely to lose his final gold medal as a consequence of the Jerome Young doping case.
International Association of Athletics Federations (IAAF) spokesman Nick Davies said on Thursday the world governing body would hold an extraordinary council meeting on Sunday to decide whether to recommend disqualifying the U.S. 4x400 metres relay team that won the gold medal at the 2000 Sydney Olympics.
The council was not scheduled to meet until next month's Athens Olympics.
The Court of Arbitration for Sport (CAS) ruled last month that world 400 metres champion Young should not have competed in Sydney after a positive test for the anabolic steroid nandrolone the previous year.
Young, who had been cleared to compete by a USA Track & Field (USATF) Doping Hearing Panel, ran in two early rounds for the relay team in Sydney. Johnson anchored the team in the final.
Davies said the council meeting would be held on the final day of the world junior championships in Grosseto, Italy. Its recommendation will then be considered by the International Olympic Committee (IOC) which usually endorses the decisions of its member federations.
