Star attraction Sonia O'Sullivan gave the large crowd plenty to cheer about when she took victory in the Women's 1,500m at The Mardyke in Cork this afternoon. Always up with the pace, the Cobh native led at the bell with Freda Davoren from Kerry, and when the pack seemed to be closing in the home straight she dug deep to win to the delight of the Cork crowd.
O'Sullivan finished in a respectable time of 4:09.86secs ahead of Renee Kalmer of South Africa in second. Roisin McGettigan from Wicklow put in a great performance to finish in the medals marginally behind Kalmer.
Other Irish successes included Gareth Turnbull from Belfast, who won the Men's 1,500m winning from an international field in a time of 3:40.18secs.
Gary Ryan from Nenagh was the sprint star of the day, winning the Men's 200m and finishing second in the 100m behind Dwight Thomas of Jamaica in a time of 10.46secs, 1/100th of a second outside his personal best.
Another Irish victory saw Adrian O'Dwyer of Kilkenny win the Men's High Jump competition with a leap of 2m 21cm.
