O'Sullivan wins on home soil

Sonia O'Sullivan made a winning return to action in Ireland this afternoon when she took victory in the Irish short cross country trials at the ALSAA course in Dublin.

O'Sullivan, who will compete in the event at the world cross country championships later this month in Leopardstown, was first to the line in a time of 12 mins and 46 seconds. Maria McCambridge was second, 17 seconds adrift, with Valerie Vaughan third and Rosemary Ryan in fourth.

Peter Mathews was first home in the men's short course event in a time of 11 mins and 25 seconds, 13 seconds ahead of team-mate Robert Connolly. Galway's Paul McNamara was in third.
