McCarthy impresses at Nationals

Celbridge's 18-year-old sprint sensation David McCarthy turned in the performance of the day at the National Indoor Championships. The promising teenager won the 400m in 47.70 defeating Olympian Robert Daly in the process and setting a new Irish junior indoor record.

Ireland's world class walker Robert Heffernan lowered his own Irish men's 5km indoor record by 19 seconds in clocking 53mins 09secs.

The race of the day was undoubtedly the men's 200m final in which Gary Ryan claimed victory over Tom Cummins by a mere 1/100th of a second.

Ciara Sheehy doubled up to win both women's short sprints, taking the 60 m in a time of 7.56secs and the 200m in 24.20secs. Dervla O'Rourke took the honours in the 60m hurdles.
