Waterford Olympian Jamie Costin recorded an outstanding performance when he won the silver medal in the New Zealand 50km walk Championships in Christchurch on Sunday in gale force conditions. Up until the 40km mark, it looked like Costin was going to break his own Irish record of 3:59.02 before the wind gradually began to wear him down and he lost contact with eventual winner, local star Craig Barrett.
Costin's time of 4:02.42, the second fastest time of his career, is also under the qualifying standard for the European Championships to be held in Munich next August.
