Olympic 10,000 metres champion Haile Gebrselassie won the world half-marathon title at his first attempt on Sunday, one second ahead of Ethiopian team mate Tesfaye Jifar. Gebrselassie sprinted to victory in a personal best of one hour three seconds. Jifar also set a personal best of 60:04 with Tanzanian champion John Yuda third in 60:12, also a personal best.
Paula Radcliffe of Britain won the world women's half-marathon title in an unofficial one hour six minutes 46 seconds.
