Gebrselassie to make marathon debut next year

Olympic 10,000 metres champion Haile Gebrselassie plans to make his marathon debut in either London or Rotterdam early next year. The 28-year-old Ethiopian told a news conference today he was ready to step up to the 42.195 kms marathon although he still had unfinished business on the track.

Gebrselassie, who runs in the world half-marathon championships on Sunday, was beaten for the first time in eight years over the 10,000 at last August's Edmonton world championships.

"I will definitely be running in London or Rotterdam," Gebrselassie said. "I will go where there's the most money. I am looking forward to a course that is good for a beginner."

He said he still planned to run on the track and added that he would compete in next year's world cross-country championships in Dublin.
