Canada's Venolyn Clarke has brought shame on the host country after becoming the first athlete to fail a drugs test at the World Championships in Edmonton. The 100m sprinter tested positive for the banned anabolic steroid stanozolol during the Canadian's pre-championships camp in Calgary.
The Jamaican born national champion failed to qualify from yesterday's heats, but this morning's news will bring embarrassment to the hosts following the 34-year-old's assertions that her remarkable recent progress was down to a revolutionary new programme that featured eastern philosophy and western medication.
The drug is the same one that caused the downfall of Canadian sprinter Ben Johnson after he had won the Olympic 100 metres final in Seoul in 1998.
