Szabo threatens pull-out in doping row

Romania's Olympic 5,000 metres champion Gabriela Szabo has threatened to withdraw from the 5,000m at the world championships if Russian Olga Yegorova is allowed to compete.

Yegorova became the first athlete to test positive for the performance-enhancing drug erythropoietin (EPO) last month but because she is appealing, the Russian has been cleared to compete at Edmonton.

"If she does, I will not run," Szabo said on Wednesday. "This is bad for running. It is not true competition."

EPO increases the number of red blood cells in the blood and helps to carry oxygen to the muscles, increasing endurance.

Yegorova, the world indoor 3,000m champion, gave a positive test at the Paris Golden League meeting on July 6.
