Triple Olympic champion Marion Jones will not try to duplicate her Sydney Olympic schedule by going for five gold medals at August's world championships. Jones, who became the first female to win five medals in a single Games at last year's Sydney Games, has not finalised her schedule for the Edmonton championships.
But she told Reuters in an interview: "I can tell you right now I'm not going for five. It was really exciting to go to Sydney and pursue the five," said Jones, who left the Games with three gold medals and two bronzes. "But this world championships, I kind of want to take it in a little bit more. I've kind of established myself now, and really don't have to prove anything."
She and her coach, Trevor Graham, will determine later which events will be on her Edmonton agenda.
"We'll see how thin I want to stretch it," Jones said, laughing. "You can pretty much count on me being in the 100, that's my premier event, and I've been hooked on the 4x400 (metre relay), so I don't think I can shake that off. I'm not interested in running that individual 400 in the least, but I really had a wonderful time in Sydney with my team-mates (in the 4x400). And if given the opportunity in Edmonton (to run the 4x400), I will jump at it." (Reuters)
