Olympic silver medallist Sonia O’Sullivan will spearhead the Irish athletics team at next month's World Indoor championships in Portugal. The Irish team of 11 was announced last night with O’Sullivan, who is currently training in her Australian base, selected to run in the 1,500 and 3,000m.
A new face in the Irish team is Daniel Caulfield who has regained superb fitness and will compete in the 800m. Caulfield has returned to America with a new coach and recent performances have included a close second to Johnny Gray in the Millrose Games in Madison Garden in New York earlier this month.
The following is the Irish team due to compete in the World Indoor Championships in Lisbon on March 9th-11th.
Men: 200m P Brizzell (Ballymena and Antrim); 200m T Coman (Templemore); 800m Daniel Caulfield (Dublin City Harriers); 1,500m James Nolan (UCD); 3,000m Mark Carroll (Leevale); 60m Hurdles P Coughlan (Crusaders)
Women: 60m C Sheehy (Dublin City Harriers); 400m Karen Shinkins (Dublin City Harriers), 1,500/3,000m S O’Sullivan (Ballymore Cobh), S Delahunty (Kilkenny City Harriers); 3,000m B Dennehy-Willis (Bandon AC)
