Athletics: O'Sullivan impresses Down Under

Sonia O'Sullivan continues to impress in Australia, where the Cobh athlete recorded back to back victories in two Grand Prix Athletics Series events this weekend. Sonia was in inspiring form in yesterday's 1500m event, where she ran her best time Down Under, 4.06.34, to claim first place ahead of young Victorian, Georgie Clarke at the Sydney venue.

This was a repeat of the placings at the Victorian Championships last weekend, while Suzy Walsham, another Australian who is making a welcome return to top level competition, finished third in a time of 4.12.87.

O'Sullivan then captured her second victory in two days in Canberra this afternoon, where she moved up to 3000m with with her usual ease to win in an excellent time of 8.49.89. Sonia ran a good race with a particularly strong last two laps, coming home ahead of young Queenslander, Benita Willis and the talented young Victorian, Haley McGregor, in third.

The next meeting in the Grand Prix Series will be in Melbourne on 1st March. This will be O'Sullivan's last competitive appearance in Australia before heading to Europe for the World Indoor Championships in Lisbon and, of course, the World Cross Championships at Leopardstown at the end of March.
