WEATHER

The dry spell continues in Dublin. Temperatures should be about eight degrees.

Formality awaits?

Republic of Ireland went to Heraklion and had something of a mixed performance.

The first half? Drab and uninspiring. The Greeks were clearly a poor side and the visitors allowed them into the game and failed to create much of note.

It all changed after the half-time whistle.

Katie McCabe and Marissa Sheva came on and changed the game, leading to a 4-0 victory.

Ireland had just come off a sobering 4-0 defeat away to Slovenia in February so there was some healing in the result at least.

The display still leaves some questions, as head coach Carla Ward admitted herself.

Tonight's game will bring expectations of hitting the goal trail again.

How does the group shape up?

As it stands Ireland are on track for a promotion/relegation play-off.

Currently occupying second place, the Girls in Green have a big task to reel in Slovenia in top spot.

Slovenia will fancy getting the job done again versus Turkey this evening.

But a play-off would be no harm given Ward is still finding her feet as Ireland boss and more games will give her a chance to assess more players.

Time to mix it up as McCabe sits out

The main headline is Katie McCabe will miss out in this game due to picking up a yellow card in Greece.

In terms of good yellow cards, this was of the very best.

The Arsenal star is nursing a calf injury and may not have featured regardless. She now has a clean slate for the remaining games in the group.

It was illuminating how much Ireland needed McCabe to change the game.

Ward will see positives and negatives in that and tonight is a chance for others to step up.

Kyra Carusa is out with a quad injury which means Amber Barrett, goalscorer last Friday in injury-time, or Saoirse Noonan will be given a chance to shine.

"What an individual, what a great human being to work with," said Ward of Barrett.

"She said to me after, 'thank you for giving me the opportunity', but actually thank you for getting that final goal. That's what she's capable of. She comes in, she's a big moment player, but let me tell you now, what a wonderful character to work with."

Ward discussed leaving out Caitlin Hayes (above) from her starting XI.

The Brighton defender has found game time tough to come by.

"Look those are conversations that me and Caitlin have had, we've got a really open relationship," added Ward.

"I'm sure the players will tell you I’ll often give you a really honest answer. She knows where she’s at, she’s on board with where she’s at. I think Jessie Stapleton has done tremendously well as has Anna Patten, and there is real competition in that back-line."

Shelbourne midfielder Alex Kavanagh has been called up with McCabe absent.

The 25-year-old has been a stand-out performer in the SSE Airtricity Women's Premier Division and has one Ireland cap to her name after coming on in a friendly match against Wales nine years ago.

Greece struggling

Over 6,000 tickets have been snapped up already for the game to support the Girls in Green.

It's fair to say it's not the visiting team who are the attraction.

Greece players are mostly based in their own home league.

Union Berlin duo Athanasia Moraitou and Eleni Markou, plus Everton's Veatriki Sarri, are some of their best playing elsewhere in Europe.

In truth, they offered very little last Friday. They will come to Dublin low on confidence and perhaps ready to sit in, hoping to frustrate Ireland.

What's next?

Ireland finish this group with matches away to Turkey on 30 May followed by the home clash with Slovenia on 3 June in Pairc Ui Chaoimh.

The latter will be a big occasion so there can be no slip-ups in the hoping of attracting fans to Cork.
