Yankees seize World Series advantage

Alex Rodriguez inspired a Yankees comeback

Alex Rodriguez hit a video-reviewed two-run homer to inspire the New York Yankees to a comeback 8-5 win over the Philadelphia Phillies and move them 2-1 ahead in the World Series.

The Yankees were 3-0 behind when Rodriguez's first hit in the series rebounded off a television camera stationed on the right-field wall before rebounding back into play.

The officials originally called it only a double but after reviewing the replay they sent the runners around.

Nick Swisher and Hideki Matsui then hit solo homers to ensure Jayson Werth's two-homer night for the Phillies was in vain.

Andy Pettitte claimed his MLB record 17th win in the post-season for the Yankees, while the night was not so memorable for his Phillies counterpart Cole Hamels who was relieved in the fifth innings.

Rain forced the game to be delayed by an hour and 20 minutes, but when things got started the defending champions raced into a 3-0 lead following some sloppy Yankees defence.

Pettitte hung up a pitch for Werth to rip over the left-field fence in the second innings before the left-hander was involved in a mix-up with catcher Jorge Posada that allowed Hamels a base hit when his short bunt should have resulted in a routine out.

Pettitte then walked in Jimmy Rollins before a sacrifice fly to left-field from Shane Victorino sent the Phillies clear.

The Yankees pulled two runs back in the fourth on Rodriguez's reviewed homer - the first time such a call had been made in World Series history.

The visitors then streaked ahead with three runs in their next visit to the plate.

Pettitte was the unlikely source to get things rolling when he floated a ball into centre field to send Swisher home.

Johnny Damon then fired a drive off the centre-field wall which allowed Pettitte and Derek Jeter to cross home plate.

Hamels, one of the Phillies' heroes in last year's World Series success, was struggling and was replaced in the fifth.

But his reliever JA Happ fared little better as Swisher sent him over left-field wall in the sixth to put the Yankees 6-3 ahead.

Werth made it 6-4 at the bottom of the sixth when he unleashed into the second tier, but Posada immediately restored the Yankees three-run lead in the seventh.

The Yankees catcher sliced into the opposite field for Damon to get home and when Matsui hit a solo homer, from his only at bat, in the eighth innings the Yankees were 8-4 clear.

The Phillies needed four runs to level matters at the bottom of the ninth and were given hope when Carlos Ruiz homered Phil Hughes over centre field.

That prompted Mariano Rivera to be sent to the mound and the veteran closer needed just five pitches to get the two required outs and close out the contest.

The series remains in Philadelphia for Game Four on Sunday.
