Donegal's Sinead Jennings has qualified for Sunday's final of the lightweight women's single sculls at the World Rowing Championships in Linz and Ottensheim in Austria.

The Letterkenny native finished in second place behind American Julie Nichols in her semi-final, clocking a time of 7:56.18 to clinch her place in Sunday's decider.

Jennings had led the race almost from start to finish before losing out by 0.17 of a second, and will be encouraged by the fact she forced the highly rated Lindsay Jennerich of Canada into third place.

The Dublin based pharmacist won the event in Lucerne in 2001 as well as coming fourth in Spain three years later, when she cursed her luck having collided with a buoy when leading the race in the final stages.

Meanwhile, Richard Coakley and Eugene Coakley came home fourth in their semi-final in the lightweight men's pair. The duo were beaten by the Serbian, Dutch and Austrian crews.

Also this morning, Ireland's first crew into action, the men's coxed pair of James Wall, Alan Martin and Mike Griffin, finished in sixth and last place of their heat.
