Brian Woods dumped sixth seed Co Stompe out of the Lakeside BDO World Championships to seal a place in the quarter-finals at Frimley Green.

Woods, seeded five places below the Dutchman, sealed a 4-2 win with some impressive form in the closing stages.

The tie was balanced at 2-2 - Stompe impressing with a maximum 170 checkout - until Woods took control to win the next two sets.

‘I knew that Co would be hard to beat but aimed to keep matching his scoring and then hit the doubles as he was missing them,’ said Woods.

‘If I play my own game I am capable of beating anyone.

‘The secret to my performances this year is that I feel more comfortable up on stage. I think it might be that I came through the playoffs during the past two years but qualified through the rankings this year.’

Ted Hankey also booked his place in the next round, dispatching Andy Boulton inside 48 minutes to claim a 4-1 win.

Hankey, world champion in 2000, claimed nine of the opening 11 legs to race into a 3-0 lead and closed the match out comfortably despite dropping the fourth set.

Australian Simon Whitlock beat Holland's Fabian Roosenbrand 4-1 in the day's other encounter.

Whitlock and Hankey will play each other in the last eight, while Woods' reward for toppling Stompe is a quarter-final meeting with third seed Scott Waites.

Waites was last on stage on day five and beat unseeded Remco van Eijden 4-2.

Van Eijden missed two doubles to force a deciding set at 3-2 down but his opponent did not make the same mistake and was relieved to clinch the win.
