It has been another successful day for Team Ireland at the Special Olympics in Shanghai, with Irish competitors collecting four gold, four silver and two bronze medals.

In the swimming pool, Dubliner Paddy Monaghan came second in the 100m freestyle, with Antrim's Ryan Archibald taking the bronze in a personal best time of one minute and 21 seconds. Ruth Swann finished second in the final of the 50m butterfly.

Carol O'Rourke won gold in bocce final by beating an Indian opponent 12-9, with Mayo native Patricia McNicholas claiming a bronze in the event.

Team Ireland also fared well in equestrian events, with Corkman Kieran Buckley scooping gold medal in the ring. 18-year-old Sarah Kate Jordan from Carlow secured silver in the equestrian competition.

Mayo's Mary Henry took gold in the equestrian event, while Ann O'Brien from Donegal took silver.

The badminton mixed doubles pair of Derek Kelly (Wicklow) and Diane Brown (Carlow) ensured Ireland took their gold medal count for today to four.

The men's 11-a-side soccer side thumped Austria 12-0, but the 5-a-side team fell to a 5-2 defeat to Slovenia. And the women's 5-a-side team, despite a good first half performance, lost 5-0 to Poland.
