Green Bay Packers quarterback Brett Favre broke Dan Marino's NFL record for career touchdown passes in the first quarter of the game against the Minnesota Vikings.

Favre tossed the 421st touchdown pass of his career with a 16-yard strike over the middle to Greg Jennings with 4:56 left in the first period. The score gave the Packers a 7-0 lead.

There was a brief pause in the game and an announcement was made to recognise the achievement. Favre received polite applause from the partisan Vikings fans at the Metrodome.

It was the second major record set this season by Favre, who has sparked the surprising Packers to a 3-0 record and first place in the NFC North.

Two weeks ago in a 35-13 victory over the New York Giants, Favre recorded his 149th career victory to surpass John Elway as the winningest quarterback in NFL history.

Last week, Favre matched Marino's record with three TD passes in a 31-24 victory over the San Diego Chargers.

Making his record 241st consecutive start, Favre broke Marino's mark on the Packers' second possession after tackle Johnny Jolly returned a fumble 19 yards to the Vikings 46.

On the first play of the drive, Favre hit tight end Donald Lee for a 27-yard gain.

After a three-yard run by Dexter Wynn and a completion to running back Ryan Grant for no gain, the Packers faced a 3rd-and-7.

Favre broke one of the NFL's most cherished records by hitting Jennings on a crossing pattern inside the 5 and Jennings did the rest.

In Green Bay's first three games, Favre passed for 861 yards and six touchdowns.
