RTÉ.ie/sport has been named Ireland's best Sports, Health and Leisure Website for 2006 at the tenth annual eircom Golden Spider Awards for the best Internet sites.

This year’s winners were announced at a ceremony in Dublin last night, and were evaluated on a mix of content, structure and navigation, visual design, functionality, interactivity, and the overall user experience. The Golden Spiders were established to promote and reward excellence in the internet industry and have become an established landmark in Irish business.

The sports section of RTÉ.ie was recognised for its comprehensive and timely delivery of the latest news and results, while also offering extensive live and on-demand video and audio streams of soccer, GAA and boxing over the last 12 months.

The national broadcaster's website won three awards in total, including the overall prize, the 2006 Grand Prix Award.

RTÉ.ie was also named as Best News, Media and Entertainment Website, the third year in a row that the site has won in the media category.

Commenting on the achievement, Múirne Laffan, Executive Director of RTÉ Publishing, said: ‘Winning the overall ‘Grand Prix Award’ is the ultimate vote of confidence by industry experts in RTÉ.ie, and underlines its position as the trusted source for independent, reliable and authoritative news and information.
