Chris Carpenter pitched eight masterful innings and Jim Edmonds drove in two runs as the St Louis Cardinals posted a 5-0 victory over the Detroit Tigers to take a 2-1 lead in the World Series.
Making his World Series debut, Carpenter allowed only three hits in eight innings, yielding a third-inning single to Brandon Inge and singles in the fifth and eighth to Sean Casey.
The right-hander struck out six, did not walk a batter, never had a three-ball count and threw 55 of 82 pitches for strikes, before making way in the ninth inning for Braden Looper.
