Scholten into the last eight in Blackpool

Dutchman Roland Scholten booked his place in the quarter-finals of the Stan James World Matchplay for the first time in Blackpool tonight with victory over Andy Jenkins.

Scholten, the 2004 Budweiser UK Open champion, is one of the most consistent players on the PDC circuit but has struggled at the Winter Gardens since his debut in 2000.

However, he looked impressive in his first-round win over Andy Smith - hitting nine 180s - and he added five more in his 13-8 victory over Jenkins.

Both players scored well at the start of the match but it was Scholten who edged 6-4 ahead at the second break.
A brilliant 140 checkout increased his advantage to three legs at one stage before Jenkins took out 160 - equalling the highest finish of the week so far.

A late surge moved Scholten within one leg of victory and although Jenkins hit back with double 10, his opponent closed out the match with double four.

Elsewhere Chris Mason will face James Wade in the last eight following a 13-7 win over Steve Maish, the man who ended Colin Lloyd's title defence at the first hurdle.

'Mace the Ace' made a great start, racing into a 4-1 lead, but Maish fought back well to trail 6-4 when they left the stage for a second time.

However, Mason pulled clear again and Maish was unable to respond, winning just three more legs.

Mason revealed afterwards that he almost pulled out before the game started, saying: 'I don't feel very well, I haven't been right all week.'
