The French squad to take on Ireland and the Faroe Islands in their September World Cup qualifiers has been named and shows few surprises.

As expected Lilian Thuram, Claude Makelele and Zinedine Zidane are all included in the squad after coming out of international retirement.

All three had announced their retirements from international football after the 0-1 loss to Greece in the quarter-finals of the Euro 2004 in Portugal last summer.

However, Arsenal midfielder Robert Pires remains out in the cold and has again missed out on selection after criticising manager Raymond Domenech.

The French are struggling to qualify from Group 4 and are currently in fourth place, three points behind leaders Ireland but with a game in hand.

Domenech largely stuck by the squad he selected for a recent friendly with the Ivory Coast but he did bring back Barcelona forward Ludovic Giuly to replace the injured David Trezeguet of Juventus.

French squad:
Gregory Coupet, Mickael Landreau, Lilian Thuram, Willy Sagnol, William Gallas, Jean-Alain Boumsong, Gael Givet Jonathan Zebina, Sebastien Squillaci, Claude Makelele, Patrick Vieira, Zinedine Zidane, Jerome Rothen, Alou Diarra, Vikash Dhorasoo, Thierry Henry, Sylvain Wiltord, Djibril Cisse, Sidney Govou, Florent Malouda, Ludovic Giuly
