David Wachman is a man whose winners are beginning to pile up and the Cashel trainer recorded his first treble at Cork today where John Oxx’s Hazarista ran out the winner of the Group 3 Blue Wind Stakes. Hazarista, supplemented by connections for the race, was, on jockey arrangements, the second string for his race with stable jockey Michael Kinane opting to ride unplaced Zarafsha. Oxx described the winner as having “improved gradually this year. We gave her a good chance but Michael just decided to ride Zarafsha. She didn’t handle the hard ground.”
David Wachman began his treble when newcomer Intriguing landed the opening Irish Stallion Farms EBF Fillies Maiden in effortless fashion. The well backed 4/5 favourite made all, eventually winning by a very easy two and a half lengths. An impressed Wachman later reported “the plan was not to make the running but she bounced out smart and didn’t break out of half-speed. She could be anything but we will take our time with her now.”
The middle leg of Wachman’s treble was gained in the Cork Handicap with Callow Lake. Jockey Wayne Lordan had the son of Bahhare well positioned throughout before leading entering the straight. Wachman later reported “he’s a good tough horse who battled well. He may go hurdling later this year.”
The Wachman hat-trick was completed when Manjoe demolished some inferior rivals in the Fermoy Beginners’ Chase. The winner, who made all, was described as “a nice novice chaser who may run at the Galway festival.”
Trainer Paul Roche recently moved into a new yard and made his first runner from the yard a winning one when Sheer Tenby ran out the clear-cut winner of the six furlong handicap. Roche added “he needs fast ground and it is possible six furlongs is his correct trip, as opposed to one mile.”
Trainer Michael O’Brien is a man to keep on your side when backing horses and the Naas handler saddled three winners, between Cork and Downpatrick. His across-the-card treble was highlighted by the success of Commonchero in the Carbon Group Handicap Chase at the Southern venue.
Commonchero raced in mid division before making steady progress to lead on the run to the final fence with Ruby Walsh’s mount eventually defeating Ichi Beau by four lengths. O’Brien’s two Downpatrick winners were Flavian Dynasty and Wrapitup.
The concluding bumper was won by Aidan Fitzgerald and trainer Jessica Harrington with newcomer Star Horse.
