Ryan lifts National squash title

Number 2 seed Derek Ryan took revenge for his defeat last year against Stevie Richardson beating him in the final of the National Squash Championships 3-0 9-4-9-2 9-0.

Richardson suffered a set-back in the opening set when he went over on his ankle and after that struggled with Ryan's superior movement and speed.

The second seed rushed into a 2-0 lead with his opponent serving up a string of errors off his backhand drop due to the pressure. In the third set Ryan kept the pressure on yet remained patient resulting in Richardson going the wrong way a number of times and getting frustrated with his movement.

Ryan went on to win the last set 9-0 and in lifting his 8th title, he moved closer to the legendary Willie Hosey's record of 10 titles.

Madeline Perry cruised to a comfortable three sets victory over Aisling Blake in the final of the Women's National Championship at Dublin's Fitzwilliam Lawn Tennis Club today. Perry, ranked 20th in the world, justified her number one seeding to triumph 9-1, 9-0, 9-0.

In the Men's competition, there is a repeat of last year's final with Derek Ryan facing Stevie Richardson. Title holder Richardson had an easy straight sets win over surprise semi-finalist Nigel Peyton, while Ryan overcame John Rooney.
