Baseball: Anaheim win World Series

The Anaheim Angels have won the 2002 World Series after a 4-1 victory over the San Francisco Giants in the seventh and deciding game yesterday. The Giants were favourites to win, with a a five-run lead in game six and just eight outs away from their first World Series title in 48 years. However, the Angels rallied to win 6-4 and force the series into a seventh-game showdown on Sunday.

The Angels pitching team produced a magnificent display to frustrate the Giants, who went 1-0 up at the top of the second when Benito Santiago scored. But the Angels levelled quickly, and a three-run third gave them what proved to be the match winning lead.

Angels' third baseman Troy Glaus was named as the series' Most Valuable Player after hitting .385 with three home runs and eight RBI. His six extra base hits and seven runs scored were one hit and one run shy of Series records for each category.

"I was so excited just about being a world champion," he said afterwards. "This is just icing on the cake. It's a great honour, obviously. But we play for the big trophy with the pennants on it, not for these," he added, referring to the famous World Series trophy.
