Sport: Athens chief denies security worries

Athens Olympics head Gianna Angelopoulos-Daskalaki went on a charm offensive last night to insist that worries over security and preparations for the 2004 Games were unfounded. The forceful figurehead of the Athens Olympic Committee was speaking at a news conference in London, where she claimed every building programme was either on schedule or ahead of schedule.

She also insisted that heightened security concerns surrounding the Bali bombing, the Greek terrorist organisation November 17 and last year's Twin Towers disaster were being reflected in a massive security operation.

Angelopoulos-Daskalaki's comments come as rumours in Greece grow of corners having to be cut and cost-cutting measures taken with some of the facilities. She insisted: "Athens has made significant progress towards a safe, secure and technically excellent Olympic Games in 2004."
