Ireland’s Clifton Wrottesley gave the performance of his life in the men’s skeleton race at the Winter Olympics but finished just outside the medal positions in fourth place. American Jim O'Shea took the gold medal, while Austria's Martin Rettl took silver and Gregor Staehli of Switzerland did just enough to deny Wrottesley the bronze.
Wrottesley, a British Lord who was born in Ireland but left when he was three-years-old, was ranked as high as fourth in rehearsal runs in the skeleton event over the last few days.
The skeleton is like a head-first version of the luge, with the tiny sleds capable of reaching speeds of over 80 miles per hour.
