Germany’s Andrea Henkel has won her first Olympic gold after winning the women’s biathlon 15km at the Winter Olympics in Salt Lake City. The 24-year-old missed only one of her 20 shots and set an early mark of 47 minutes 29.1 seconds, which proved to be one which her challengers couldn’t beat.
“I was surprised with my result because I didn’t think I skied very fast. I’m happy that I only missed one shot today. I’ve been on the podium several times in World Cup races, but it is so great to medal in my first Olympics,” said Henkel.
Elsewhere, Italy’s Armin Zoeggeler has won the men’s single luge title and, in the process, destroyed German Georg Hackl’s dreams of becoming the first Winter Olympian to win four successive individual gold medals in the same event. Zoeggeler finished 0.329 seconds ahead of Hackl, with Austrian Markus Prock taking the bronze medal.
