Table Tennis: 16-year-old makes Irish debut

Cork teenager Linda O'Sullivan made her debut for the Irish Senior Ladies team in the Premier Division of the British League at the weekend. O'Sullivan, a 16-year-old from St Angela's School in Cork, impressed against her English opponents and Irish captain Arthur Brett said she worked hard and showed good commitment and promise, but found the opposition very tough. O'Sullivan (Celtic Table Tennis) was unable to take victory in any of her matches even though many were closely fought five set affairs.

The three player team saw Irish No 1 Linda Mountjoy (UCC, Cork) win 4 out of her 10 matches and Tara Fusco (York Road, Dublin) win 6 out of her 10. The team drew two matches 3-3 against both Hollington and Horsham, but lost 4-2 to Leeds and 6-0 to Grove, to leave the Irish Ladies one place off the bottom.

There has been a lot of concern over the Irish Ladies' squad with a number of key players unavailable due to other international league commitments, work commitments and players taking a break from the game. It is hoped that O'Sullivan's first senior performance will stand her in good stead for the future.
