Table Tennis: Fitzgerald fails in hat-trick bid

Brian Fitzgerald failed to make his hat trick and take his third major provincial title after being beaten in the fourth set of the Leinster Open by Andrew Dennison. Dennison, who had lost to Fitzgerald in the Final of the Ulster Open earlier this year, took his first Irish ranking final for some time and the Ulsterman was delighted with his performance. Fitzgerald, along with his Cork team-mate Mark White, also lost in the final of the Mens' Doubles to the partnership of Lynch and Pemberton (both loosing singles semi-finalists).

Fitzgerald who has not walked away from an Senior Open this year without at least one title managed to keep his record in tact partnering Brioni Lane in their victory over the Dublin pair of Junior Conor Nolan and Ladies Veteran Champion Teresa Devaney. Michelle McGreevey had a fine win over Brioni Lane in the ladies singles.

The top players in Ireland will be mixing with the best from the UK and further afield in the upcoming Grand Prix at the Bangor Open. This will be one of the biggest events of the season for Irish Table Tennis. The action will start on Friday January 4 for three days.
