Table Tennis: Mixed fortunes for Ireland

Ireland had mixed fortunes at the Table Tennis Championships played in the National Sports Centre, in the Isle of Man, at the weekend. In the team event, Ireland started well disposing of both Guernsey and the hosts 10-0. However, the team struggled against eventual winners England and went down 10-0.

In the match against Scotland the ladies played well to lead 3- 2, but the men were unable to capitalise on that success and the team eventually lost 7-3. The roles were reversed against Wales, with the men taking a 3-2 lead and the women struggling against the much-improved Welsh ladies, the team finally lost 7-3.

The Individual event saw some good performances from the team with Damien Lynch coming in to replace the Irish National Champion Alan Monks, who was unable to attend. He made it to the quarterfinal stages. Brioni Lane also made it to the quarters in the ladies event losing to Kathy Parker (Eng) 3 - 1. Linda Mountjoy made a second quarterfinal where she too was beaten by an English player, Helen Lower, 3 - 0.
