A 22-year-old senior safety on the Northwestern University football team, Rashidi Wheeler, collapsed and died during training yesterday, team coach Randy Walker said. "This is a terrible tragedy for Rashidi's family and the team," Walker said. "A sudden loss like this is difficult to comprehend."
There was no immediate word on what caused Walker's death during pre-season conditioning drills, but an initial medical report said heat exhaustion did not appear to be a factor. His death came two days after Minnesota Vikings offensive lineman Korey Stringer died due to complications from heatstroke suffered during a practice held in intense heat and humidity.
