Badminton: Irish hold New Zealanders at bay

The New Zealand international badminton team are on tour in Europe at the moment and they featured pretty well in the Shires Leinster Senior Open which was played in Terenure over the last two days. However home talent managed to take the two singles titles. Bruce Topping beat Ciaran Darcy in 17/16, 15/3 in an all-Irish mens decider while Karen Bing - originally from China, now from Dublin - beat Renee Flavell of New Zealand 11/4, 11/6 in the womens final.

Flavell and Daniel Shirley did win an all-New Zealand mixed doubles final and John Gordon and Daniel Shirley won the mens doubles. The womens doubles title went to England with Tracey Dineen and Lorraine Cole beating Ireland's Elaine Kiely and Karen Bing in straight games.
